What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty usually referred to as ear surgery or ear pinning, is one of the most popular facial plastic surgery treatments worldwide. Many patients are unsatisfied with their ears’ shape, size, or excessive protrusion and desire to enhance their appearance. But they are curious about when to have the procedure and the otoplasty recovery time.
As long as their ears are fully developed, children as young as five years old are suitable for otoplasty treatments. Also, some patients and parents, understandably, may be concerned about pain or discomfort, as well as recovery periods. During your introductory visit with your otoplasty surgeon, you should be able to clear up any misconceptions and get answers to all of your questions. However, there are a few things you should know about otoplasty recovery if you’re considering it for yourself or your child.
What Should You Do After Your Otoplasty Surgery?
First and foremost, remember that each patient’s circumstance is unique, and you should follow your otoplasty surgeon’s exact aftercare recommendations to the point. Before the treatment, they will carefully examine your ears and explain each step of the procedure.
Unless you indicate otherwise, you will most likely be given a local anesthetic, which means you’ll be awake but won’t be able to feel anything in your ears during the process. Grogginess and drowsiness are common anesthetics after effects. Make sure you have someone to drive you home following the treatment.
Following your operation, here is some general aftercare advice;
- Maintain a high position for your head.
- During recovery, keep your head cool and dry.
- Take your medications exactly as prescribed.
- Use the prescribed topical ointments.
- Maintain a balanced diet.
- Wear clothing that can be removed easily.
- Wear the headbands and dressings as directed.
What Should You Avoid After Otoplasty Surgery?
Following your operation, here are some general things you should avoid;
- Ears should not be touched or rubbed.
- If you have not already, stop smoking.
- Avoid rigorous exercise.
- For the first week, avoid shampooing your hair.
Otoplasty recovery can take up to six weeks, during which time you can gradually resume your normal activities with your otoplasty surgeon’s advice.
