It does not coat or resurface anything. A peroxide gel passes through the enamel into the dentine and breaks down the pigment collected there. The tooth is unchanged afterwards — which is why it is the one to try first.

One appointment, one day
Teeth cleaned, then the starting shade recorded against a shade guide in writing — so the change is measured rather than remembered. Gums and lips isolated behind a protective barrier, the part a shop-bought kit skips, then professional-strength gel in timed cycles with a dentist watching each tooth respond. The final shade is recorded too, and any ceramic planned afterwards is matched to it.

Professional teeth whitening is an in-clinic treatment in which a whitening gel is applied to the teeth in controlled cycles while the gums are protected by a barrier. It lightens the natural colour of enamel without removing any tooth structure, and it is carried out after a dental check to make sure the teeth are healthy.
If your only concern is colour and your teeth are otherwise well shaped and aligned, teeth whitening may be all you need, and it avoids any enamel removal. Veneers are more appropriate when shape, chips, gaps or very deep discolouration also need correcting.
No. Whitening gels only lighten natural enamel, so existing crowns, veneers and tooth-coloured fillings keep their original shade. If you have visible restorations, the dentist explains how they will look next to whitened teeth and whether they may need replacing afterwards to match.
