Most people don't arrive wanting a particular operation. They arrive with a story about their body: a second baby soon after the first, a gastric sleeve that took off forty kilos, a gym habit that has fixed everything except the same two areas, or simply a shape they've never been happy with.

We ask for that story first because it predicts what we'll find. Pregnancy, weight loss and genetics each leave behind their own mix of fat, slack skin and stretched muscle, and the mix is what points to the right body surgery in Turkey. The pinch test above is the quick version. Below is the longer one, organised by what happened rather than by operation.

After pregnancy

After a pregnancy, three things can happen to the abdomen, often all at once. The skin under the navel may stay stretched. The pair of vertical muscles down the middle of the tummy can separate, which leaves a soft bulge that sit-ups won't touch. And some fat settles in places it never used to.

Liposuction only deals with the last of those. If the pinch test fails below the navel, or you can feel a gap between the muscles when you lift your head off the floor, a tummy tuck is the operation that actually addresses it. It removes the loose skin and stitches the muscle back together, which is why it costs €4,000 on our list, less than four zones of abdominal liposuction at €4,300.

Breasts often change at the same time. When tummy, flanks and breasts are all on the list, the combined plan is a mommy makeover, listed from €7,900 with eight nights in Istanbul. We'd usually suggest waiting until you've finished having children and stopped breastfeeding for a few months. Another pregnancy can stretch a repaired abdomen again.

After major weight loss

Losing a lot of weight, whether by diet or after weight loss surgery, tends to leave skin rather than fat. The skin has been stretched for years and has lost much of its spring. Liposuction on that skin makes the problem worse, not better, because it takes out what little filling remains.

So for most people in this group, the operations are lifts: an arm lift for the upper arms, a thigh lift for the inner thighs, a tummy tuck, and sometimes a body lift that goes all the way round the waist. Lifts leave scars. In exchange, they remove the skin itself, and that's the only thing that works once it has stopped contracting.

Timing matters more here than anywhere else on this page. Your weight should have stayed level for several months before any of this is planned, and after bariatric surgery that usually means waiting a year or more. Operating while you're still losing means the result shifts as you do. We also tend to stage the work over more than one trip rather than doing everything at once, since several lifts in one session is a long anaesthetic and a hard recovery.

Stubborn fat despite a healthy weight

This is the group liposuction was designed for. You're fit, your weight is steady, and yet the lower belly, the love handles, the outer thighs or the bra line stay exactly as they were. Usually that's genetics deciding where your body stores fat first and gives it up last.

Where the skin over those areas snaps back after a pinch, liposuction tends to work well. We price it by zone, starting at €2,500 for one and going up to €6,800 for eight. Don't expect the scales to move much. Liposuction changes your outline rather than your weight, and the deep fat that sits around the organs, behind the abdominal wall, is out of its reach.

Adding shape: BBL, buttock lift and calves

Not everyone wants less. Plenty of women contacting us want more, and nearly always at the buttocks. A Brazilian butt lift moves fat rather than discarding it. Liposuction collects it from the waist, flanks or back, and it's then placed where you want the extra fullness. On our list it's €5,000, with three zones of liposuction included.

A BBL needs enough spare fat to move. If you're very slim, there may not be enough to work with, and it's better to find that out early. Sagging after weight loss is another matter. For that, the operation is a buttock lift at €4,000, which removes the loose skin and adds nothing. People mix the two up all the time, so we examine for both.

Calves are the other area where people ask about adding shape. We don't list a price for calf implants. What people want from them varies a great deal. Some are after fuller calves on both legs. For others, one calf is thinner than the other after an injury or a long illness, and the aim is to match them. Each gets quoted after examination.

Body contouring for men

Men tend to bring a shorter, more specific list. Love handles and the lower belly come up most, followed by the chest. A soft, fatty chest is often gynecomastia, which has its own page because it frequently involves gland tissue that liposuction alone won't remove.

Some men are already lean and want muscle definition to show more clearly. That's HD liposuction, which has its own page and its own very particular kind of candidate. Male skin is often thicker and fat more fibrous, especially on the back and flanks, which is one of the few situations where ultrasound-assisted VASER earns its fee.

When more than one operation is involved

Combining operations is common in body surgery and often sensible. A tummy tuck with liposuction of the flanks, or a BBL with liposuction of the abdomen, are natural pairs because they work on neighbouring areas through one recovery. Most body operations on our list qualify for the combination discount. VASER (€500) and J-Plasma (€1,500) don't, because they're extras added to a liposuction, not operations of their own.

There's a limit, though, and it's set by the anaesthetist rather than the surgeon. Total operating time and the volume of fat removed both affect safety. If a plan goes past what's safe for you, it comes back smaller, or split across two visits.

Choosing a clinic for body surgery in Turkey

Istanbul has a great many clinics offering body surgery, and the price differences between them are often smaller than the differences in how carefully they assess you. A few questions sort that out quickly.

Start by asking for the pinch-test result for every area you're worried about, in writing. If the plan is liposuction, ask which zones, named one by one, and what that count costs on a published list. A single total for "lipo" tells you very little, because one clinic's zone can be another clinic's three. Where a lift is proposed, request photos of a scar at the twelve-month stage, not at six weeks.

Next, find out who sets the limit on how much is done in one go. It should be the anaesthetist, using your health history and blood results, and any good clinic will say so without hesitation. And check who will pick up when you call from home with a worry. Twelve months of follow-up is included with us, and that matters most in the weeks after you've flown back.

A clinic that answers all of that clearly, before you've paid anything, is usually a safe place to have body surgery in Turkey.

The risk we take most seriously

Blood clots in the legs, and occasionally the lungs, are the serious risk shared by all body operations. Long periods lying still increase it, and so does a long flight soon afterwards. That's why calf pumps run throughout surgery, you're walking on the day of the operation, and the surgical team rather than your booking decides when you fly home. Tell us early if you smoke, take the contraceptive pill or have had a clot before. Each one changes the precautions.

Recovery across body operations

Most body surgery stays run from four to eight nights in Istanbul, with one or two of them on the ward. Compression garments go on in theatre and stay on, day and night, for roughly a fortnight to a month.

Swelling is the main frustration. About half of it has usually gone by six weeks, but true results take three to six months to show, and scars from lifts keep fading for a year. Desk work is possible within one to three weeks depending on the operation. Lifting and the gym wait longer.
