In a SMAS facelift, the supporting layer is tightened in place by folding and stitching. In a deep plane facelift, the retaining ligaments are released so the tissue can move freely along its natural direction, which allows the midface to be lifted and often gives a longer-lasting result.
A deep plane facelift is suited to people with significant sagging that includes the cheeks and midface, not only the jawline, or those seeking the longest-lasting facelift result. Without midface descent, a lighter technique may be more appropriate, and your surgeon will say so.
