Three separate things produce the same heavy, hooded look in a photograph, and they need genuinely different corrections. Upper blepharoplasty corrects the first one directly. On the second and third it can be performed perfectly and still leave you looking at most of what you came in about.

Loose, redundant upper lid skin overhanging the lash line, with the lid margin itself sitting where it should. This is the most common reason patients come to this page, and it is exactly what upper blepharoplasty corrects. Remove the fold and the eye opens.

The only real risk of getting upper-lid surgery wrong is taking too much skin. Every step is designed to avoid it.
If lifting your brow with a finger fixes the hooding, a brow lift may be needed instead of, or as well as, upper-lid surgery.
The amount removed is measured with you upright so the lid still closes comfortably afterwards.
The surgeon excises a crescent of surplus eyelid tissue along the marked crease; hair-thin stitches then hold the fold while it knits.
Stitches come out after a few days, and the line sits in the natural crease where it becomes very hard to see.

Upper blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery that removes excess skin, and sometimes a small amount of fat or muscle, from the upper eyelids. It reduces hooding, creates a clearer eyelid crease and can make the eyes look more open and less tired.
Upper blepharoplasty suits people whose upper eyelid skin has become loose or heavy with age, causing a tired look, difficulty applying eye make-up or, in more severe cases, skin resting on the lashes and restricting the upper field of vision.
Not always. A drooping brow can push skin down onto the upper lids, making them look heavier than they are. If lifting your brow with a finger improves the hooding, a brow lift may be needed instead of, or alongside, upper blepharoplasty.
